Shingle Style Residence
Cross Point
3500 Square Feet
A new Shingle Style Residence, located within Prestigious Quarry Farm on the Sheepscott River a short boat ride from Boothbay Harbor. The residence required ample entertaining and great room space on the first floor with three second floor bedrooms and 2 1/2 bathrooms. Special accommodations include the design of a large gourmet eat in kitchen, garden views from the breakfast niche, large cathedral central hall for entertaining & visually connecting all the living spaces and dining space through to the great room and granite fireplace. While the building is set back for privacy, additional design considerations included orientating spaces to maximize sun & shade while placing the breakfast on the east morning light and the living & study room space facing south with large expansive French doors. Living, dining and bedroom spaces are designed with privacy in mind and located out of view from the street, this allows the owners to eliminate the need for window blinds and drapes, by allowing the spacial orientations and windows to be specially placed to maximize privacy and light. Special features which date back to the Shingles Styles of the 1900's include ample use of large covered porches (including three for various purposes such as wood storage, sitting and outdoor eating), scalloped shingle & pronounced gable end detailing, tall cottage hung windows & ample French doors on the first floor, stone fireplace, expansive use of douglas fir and cherry throughout. The cathedral ceilings at the second floor rooms allow the bedrooms, bathrooms and upper halls to be set within the roof line for an informal feel which brings forward the character of the gable roof lines, hips and dormers which draws many to the Shingle Style still today.
