Southport Island Residence
A new island cottage located on Southport Island sits elevated with views to the waterfront and nearby islands. A sweeping wraparound porch with stone terrace provide places to enjoy the unique views and Island breezes. A cupola sits at the gable roof intersection bringing natural light in the second floor stair and upper hall. The client requested simple forms and desired an updated cottage feel in their general requirements. Our goal was to achieve this through the simplicity of two crossing gables and a second floor set into the roof through the use of dormers. The dormers, trim, and porches together provide a cottage feel and the scale of the building is brought down while still maintaining ample bedrooms and study on the second floor. It was equally important for the cottage to blend with the surrounding cottages and not overpower the elevated site which lends itself to bringing in a sense of classic forms and lines.
